While formal education is a must for any medical professional, you can never take for granted the value of self education and advancement. Additional study in preparation for entering the career arena will give recent graduates the type of advantage necessary in a highly competitive and somewhat saturated industry such as the medical field, particularly if you intend to enter a career in physical therapy.

Physical therapy employment can be achieved in many ways, whether it is a temporary staff position at a hospital, working within a hospice, or as a private practitioner at fitness and health center. Physical therapists may also assist patients in their personal residences. This field potentially provides the opportunity to work in many different environments outside the scope of a traditional role in the medical field, and may even allow for travel throughout the course of your career.

By remaining current and up to date in new techniques and treatments, candidates can set themselves apart and offer unique value to their potential patients, employers and colleagues. Patients can also benefit from self-study, since they can develop better life style choices and habits, and learn exercises that may help improve their condition and help them manage their pain or discomfort.

Self education is also of benefit to physical therapists that do not work directly with patients and instead set policy. This will allow them to make informed decisions and find creative solutions that address the specific needs of patients and practitioners.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for teachers is on the rise. Teachers play a major role in the education industry because they are responsible for providing a quality education and motivating their students. If you are planning to become a teacher, here are some tips to help you obtain your teaching degree.

Select a Good Teaching Program

Before you apply to a college, you should do your research on the teaching degree program. Most colleges offer bachelor’s degrees to teach all levels in education. However, you want to be sure that the program is accredited with the Board of Education in their state. You should also look at the type of courses offered and the student teaching program. Recent graduates from the program should be able to provide you with information as well.

Choose the Right Teaching Subject

There are several subjects that students are able to select from to teach such as math, history, and general studies. When choosing the subject you want to teach, you should try to select something that you would be interested in and that is in high demand in the teaching field. For example, if you love learning about foreign history and events such the Kazakhstan Democracy, you may want to go into teaching history or political science.

Take Prep Courses

After graduation, most states require students to pass one or more certification exams in order to get a license to teach. If you are not good at taking exams or want to get some additional help, you should look into taking an exam prep course. The cost of these prep courses can be expensive but they will benefit you in the long run.

You can expect to pay more for higher education this fall. When the new term starts, universities strapped for cash will be collecting more from students to cover operations. Schools are facing less funding from states and the federal government at the same time that energy costs and other expenses are rising.

The amount of the tuition increase will vary from school to school but students should plan on something between 5 and 10%. Most universities have a board of trustees which will set the tuition rate after getting recommendations from the school administration. There are some states where the legislature will cap the amount of any increase for schools that receive public funding.

In Michigan, which is home to several big universities, the average tuition hike is 7%. Saginaw Valley State is boosting tuition by 6.9% for the upcoming semester after having its funding from the state cut by $4 million. Western Michigan’s hike is going to be 6.6%.

In neighboring Ohio, where Ohio State University is king, the tuition is going up 3.3%. The president of the University says it is important to keep higher education affordable to all people. The increase will raise tuition at OSU to just over $9000 per year. Universities in Kansas are setting their tuition rates as well right now and the biggest jump of 7.4% will be for out of state students who attend the University of Kansas. Teachkansas.org can help you figure out if it is worth it.

Wherever you are planning to go expect to pay more. All schools are feeling the effects of the slow down in the economy.

Anyone who has taught in public education knows that one of the best ways to bump up your pay grade is to continue your education. Getting a master’s degree in education not only improves your chances of becoming a principal or school administrator, it also gives you a nice increase in your salary. But how are you expected to go to school while you’re teaching.

Online Classes for a Master’s in Education

The answer is getting a degree through one of the many schools with accredited online programs. By getting a degree through online programs, you will be able to work at your own pace and when you have the time. Many teachers work on their coursework over summer breaks as well as on the weekends during the school year. By completing classes online, you can earn your degree without having to take a break from teaching. You can find available programs at sites such as elearners.

Benefits of Receiving a Master’s Degree

By having a master’s degree in education, there are many benefits. One is pay grade; those with a master’s degree typically earn around $10,000 more a year than those with just a teaching certificate. Another benefit is the number of doors that will open for those with a master’s degree. These could include things such as being able to teach at community colleges and being able to work in fields relating to education but not actually teaching, such as designing curriculum for schools. Finally, a master’s degree will increase your chances of gaining a teaching position at well-paid private schools.

Doors open for those with masters’ degrees.

Is a virtual education as good as a brick and mortar one? Higher education has made a major move onto the internet and people who are picking up their degrees say they loved the convenience and ability to work at their own pace.

Image via Wikipedia

In the past ten years there have been a number of online colleges to surface. Some of these schools are branches of major universities while others are stand alone institutions. The programs are developed by qualified instructors who then oversee their implementation.

Online education programs combine independent study with virtual discussions. Instead of sitting in a classroom and talking about a topic, those discussions will occur in chat rooms or over message boards. Many students today prefer electronic communications and they like the fact that they can log into the discussion from anywhere that has internet access. Many professors at brick and mortar colleges are taking their classroom discussions online.

Many of the masters degree online programs combine internet work with the classroom experience. The syllabus requires that students gather in a central location for a weekend or two during the semester for group discussions and team building exercises to supplement the work that is done online.

Modern technology makes things possible today that were not even considered a few years ago. Web cams mean that teachers can deliver their lectures to students spread out around the country in real time by using Skype or some other service. There are a growing number of schools which plan to have virtual classes on days when bad weather shuts down the building.

Going to college can be very expensive. Everyone wants to get a good education, and often that means graduating with hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans, especially if you continue on with graduate schooling. For those who qualify, Pell grants and subsidized students loans help, but what alternatives are there for those who don’t qualify or for those who find themselves needing more than what those methods provide? Here are a couple of ideas.

Short Term Loans

For students who find themselves in need of quick money to get through to the next payday, maybe in order to pay rent or to fix cars so they don’t miss work, short term loans are a great solution, as long as they’re used responsibly. For students who are able to pay these loans off when they’re due, they can be a great help.

Less Expensive Schooling

Another way to reduce expenses of school is to attend colleges that are less expensive. This could include attending a community college or state college to get all of the general education classes out of the way. After the general education classes are completed, students can easily transfer to the prestigious universities where they can take their major classes, still getting a quality education in the classes that matter the most. Before following this plan, students should confirm with their chosen school that the classes will transfer successfully.

Finding ways to reduce the cost of education is important in this day and age. Graduating with thousands of dollars in debt can cause students to spend years in debt rather than saving for homes or retirement.

You can expect a lot of things from your college education. Some of them may be fairly obvious, but others you may not have even considered. Here are a few ideas of what you can expect to get you started. You may think of others.

You can expect to earn at least a bachelor degree if you finish and graduate.

After all, that is what you’re going to college for is to earn a degree. So, stick with it and you will come out with a degree.

You can expect to have more options in the job market.

Having a college bachelor degree means you can work in several different fields, even if they are not in the one in which you majored. For example, business majors can become teachers; teachers can take on management positions. A bachelor degree will broaden your horizons.

You can expect to earn more money.

It is estimated that people with a degree can earn as much as $700,000 more over their lifetimes; some sources cite a higher figure.

You can expect to feel a sense of accomplishment.

Earning a bachelor degree takes time, effort, and, yes, money. However, once you’ve completed your college education and you receive that degree, you know that you have accomplished a major goal.

Now you know what you can expect from your degree. The next step is to figure out the best way to reach those expectations. This may mean taking advantage of online degree programs as well as “traditional” college programs. Whichever way ensures you earn that degree is the one you need to pursue.

Managing work and school can be extremely challenging – trying to make a budget work with part-time income is even harder. It can be done, though, as many students have learned.

Tip 1: Know where all of your money is going. Write down a budget so you know what needs to be paid out of the income you are getting. Write down any other expenses, including sodas and other cash purchases so you can see where you need to make changes.

Tip 2: Use your budget. Make sure you plan accordingly for expenses you have, such as books, food, rent, utilities, etc. Generally food can get expensive if you are eating out. Try eating less expensive meals at home or with friends. Even pizza at home is cheaper since you’re not ordering drinks in a restaurant.

Tip 3: Try purchasing items you need used or barter and trade. Maybe you moved into your apartment finding you don’t need an end table, but do need another shelf. Try finding someone to trade with. If you need new books, try getting used books at the bookstore. Many students try to trade their books in for their next set when new classes start.

These are all ways you can manage your money more efficiently.

There is a great debate going on in America right now over the value of a college education. As higher education costs soar, there is a growing number of people who believe many students are throwing their money away by going to a four year school. These experts say young people would be better off learning a trade and going to work.

The lengthy recession is contributing to the complaints that higher education may not be worth it. There are a number of stories about graduates who have taken out thousands of dollars in loans to get their degree and then can’t pay the money back because they can’t find a good paying job. No doubt you have also heard stories about students getting their diplomas and then going to work waiting tables.

One education expert say it is not fair to blame the colleges for the poor job prospects, Kevin Carey with Education Sector says the trouble is with the economy. His research reveals that every time there is an economic downturn in the United States, stories calling college a waste surface. The truth according to teachkansas.org is that college grads will make a million dollars more in their lifetime than someone who only has a high school diploma.

Another telling statistic which shows the value of a college education is a comparison of the jobless rates of recent college grads to high school grads. The people with bachelor degrees have an unemployment rate of around 5 percent while those who did not pursue any type of higher education have an unemployment rate over 10%.

When graduates of college enter the job market and find it tough to get a job, the immediate reaction is did I waste thousands of dollars on my education? The lengthy recession has made it difficult to find a good paying job even if you paid good money to be trained to enter the workforce. The bottom line is that a college degree will pay off, it just may take some time.

Study after study have shown that people with college degrees make much more on average than people who do not. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that 55% of the people with degrees believe that their educational training helped them land a job. Most people also say that they believe college has intellectual and cultural benefits that make the expense worthwhile.

The job market right now is tough for everyone whether they have a college degree or not and some experts say the college grad is in a better position to compete for the jobs that are available. A New York Times report examined the unemployment rate for people with varying levels of education and found that those who had a bachelors degree or higher had the lowest jobless rate around 5%. Learn more about what majors lead to the best jobs at teachkansas.org.

Most of the research shows that people who have college degrees will earn twice as much money in their lifetime than those who only finished high school. The earnings difference between a high school diploma and a bachelors degree could add up to a million dollars or more.
